Fuse Cutout

1.Fuse Cutout, also called Dropout fuse, is an electrical device that disconnects a circuit by causing the fuse link to melt with its own heat when the current exceeds a specified value. A fuse link disconnects a circuit by melting it with its own heat after the current exceeds the specified value for a certain period of time. This can also be opened by the linemen standing on the ground using a   long insulating stick called a “hot stick.

Fuse Cutout is an electric current protector made using this principle. It is widely used in high and low voltage distribution systems and control systems as well as electrical equipment, as short circuit and overcurrent protector, is one of the most widely used protection devices.

Fuse cutout  can be divided into high voltage fuse cutout and low voltage fuse cutout according to the service voltage.  It can be divided into dropout fuse for protecting transformers and general electrical equipment,  for protecting voltage transformers, for protecting power capacitors, ffor protecting semiconductor components, dropout fuse for protecting motors and dropout fuse for protecting household appliances, etc. According to the structure can be divided into open type, semi-closed type, pipe type and jet type fuse cutout

The rated current of the fuse link is not equal to the rated current of the whole fuse cutout . The rated current of the fuse link shall be selected according to the load current of the protected equipment. The rated current of the fuse cutout shall be greater than the rated current of the fuse link.

Fuse cutout Structure.

The fuse cutout is mainly composed of a fuse link, a fuse cutout body and a fuse holder.

THE FUSE CUTOUT BODY,  a porcelain or a polymer insulator body that isolates the conductive portion from the supports to which the insulator is fastened.

THE FUSE HOLDER, also called the insulating fuse tube, it contains the replaceable fuse elements inside. when the contained fuse melts, it disconnects the circuit, and the fuse holder drops  and hangs from a hinge on its lower end. This hanging fuse holder indicates  that the fuse has melted and that the circuit has disconnect. The circuit can also be disconnect manually by  linemen using the hot stick. The fuse holder may be replaced by a solid blade, which would allow the fuse holder assembly to be used as a switch only.

THE FUSE LINK, also is the fuse elements. is the replaceable portion of the fuse cutout  that will melt and diconnect the circuit with its own heat when there is overcurrent went through it. The fuse link is the key element to control the fuse characteristics. The material, size and shape of the fuse link determine the melt properties. fuse link materials are divided into two categories: low melting point and high melting point. Low melting point materials such as lead and lead alloy, its melting point is low and easy to fuse, because of its high resistivity, so made of a large cross section size, more metal vapor produced during the melting, only suitable for the low breaking capacity of the fuse cutout. High melting point materials such as copper, silver, its melting point is high, not easy to fuse, but because of its low resistivity, can be made than the low melting point of smaller cross section size, less metal vapor produced during the melting, suitable for high breaking capacity of the fuse cutout . The shapes of fuse link are either filamentous or banded. Changing the shape of the variable section can significantly change the melt characteristics of the fuse cutout. Fuse cutouts have various melted characteristic curves and can be applied to different types of protection objects.
